Don’t worry. At Traford Safaris Ltd, we make sure all our guests feel welcome and well cared for. In this guide, we explain how you can enjoy your safari without any food problems be it Hala, Vegan,Gluten -free ..Whether it’s for health reasons, religion, or personal choice we are here to help you eat safely and happily while exploring East Africa.
What Safari Food Is Like in East Africa
When people think about a safari, they usually imagine animals like lions, elephants, and giraffes not the food. But food is a big part of the experience.
In East Africa (Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda), most safari lodges and camps offer fresh, tasty meals. These include local dishes, international favorites, and special diet meals when requested.
Today, many safari chefs know how to cook for people with different food needs. They can prepare meals that are halal, vegan, vegetarian, gluten free, dairy free, or nut free as long as they know in advance.
The most important thing is to tell us your diet needs early, so we can prepare with our safari partners.
Halal on Safari: Eating According to Your Faith
Eating Halal Is Easy with the Right Planning
If you follow a halal diet, we make sure your meals are prepared the right way. East Africa has many Muslims, especially along the coast, so halal food is well known here.
At Traford Safaris, we make sure that:
-
You get halal meat from trusted suppliers.
-
No alcohol or pork is used in your meals.
-
Cooking tools are kept clean and separate if needed.
-
Prayer times and spaces are respected (we can even provide prayer mats).
Some lodges in places like Zanzibar, Mombasa, and Arusha already follow halal rules. In more remote places, we tell the chef ahead of time to prepare halal meals.
Examples of Halal Meals on Safari
-
Grilled chicken with rice and vegetables.
-
Lentil soup with chapati (flatbread).
-
Tropical fruit salads and fresh juices.
We want you to enjoy your food while following your faith.
Vegan on Safari: Plant-Based and Delicious

Vegan meal
You Can Eat More Than Just Salads
Being vegan means you don’t eat any animal products. No meat, milk, eggs, or honey. Many people choose this for health, ethical, or environmental reasons.
East African lodges are now offering great vegan meals. Many local dishes are naturally plant based. We work with chefs who know how to cook vegan meals that are filling, tasty, and healthy.
When you travel with Traford Safaris, we let all the hotels and camps know ahead of time so they prepare properly.
Tasty Vegan Dishes You Can Try
-
Bean stew with rice.
-
Vegetable curry with coconut milk.
-
Roasted sweet potatoes and greens.
-

-

Vegan food in East Africa is full of flavor, culture, and color. You won’t go hungry here!
Gluten-Free on Safari: Safe and Simple Meals

Gluten free meal
No Worries About Gluten
If you can’t eat gluten (found in wheat, bread, and pasta), don’t worry. While some East African foods do have gluten, many others don’t. We tell our partner lodges in advance so they can prepare gluten-free meals and avoid cross contamination.
What we do for gluten-free guests:
-
Tell chefs to use clean tools and avoid mixing with gluten foods.
-
Ask for gluten-free bread, pasta, or snacks (in higher-end lodges).
-
Offer local gluten free foods like ugali (maize flour), cassava, and sweet potatoes.
Gluten-Free Foods You’ll Find on Safari
-
Grilled meats and fish (with no sauces containing flour).
-
Fresh fruits and vegetables.
-
Rice, millet, maize, or cassava dishes.
-
Simple soups and stews made without flour.
If you have celiac disease, we will take even more care to keep your food safe.
How to Prepare for Your Special Diet Safari
1. Tell Us Early
The most important step is to tell us your food needs when you book your safari. We need time to talk to the lodges, guides, and chefs.
Be specific. Say things like:
-
“No eggs or dairy” (for vegan).
-
“Only halal meat” or “no pork or alcohol in meals.”
-
“Gluten-free only. Please avoid cross-contamination.”
2. Travel with the Right Safari Company
Not all tour operators understand special diets. Traford Safaris does. We take your food needs seriously. We only book places that can meet your diet needs.
3. Pack a Few Snacks
It’s a good idea to bring:
-
Gluten-free crackers or protein bars.
-
Vegan snacks like nuts or dried fruit.
-
Halal instant meals or small food packs (just in case).
4. Talk to Your Safari Guide
Your safari guide is with you all day. Let them know about your food needs. They’ll help make sure you get the right meals and snacks throughout your trip.
