June 23, 2025
Why East Africa Is 2025’s Top Destination for Nature First Travel
June 24, 2025At Traford Safaris, we believe that the beauty of East Africa is more than what you see it’s also in the people you meet and the wildlife you encounter. That’s why our mission goes beyond travel. We are committed to giving back to the land, wildlife, and communities that make our safaris so special. In this blog, we share how Traford Safaris actively supports conservation and community initiatives across Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, and Burundi and how every trip with us helps protect and empower East Africa.
Why We Give Back
Tourism is powerful. When done responsibly, it can provide jobs, fund conservation efforts, and preserve cultures for generations to come. At Traford Safaris, we believe in travel that gives more than it takes.
This is why a portion of every safari booking goes directly into projects that:
-
Protect wildlife and fragile ecosystems
-
Empower local communities through education and skills
-
Promote sustainable development and cultural preservation
Let’s take a closer look at how we’re doing this on the ground.
1. Wildlife Conservation Projects
Our team works closely with national parks, wildlife authorities, and local rangers to help protect endangered species and support healthy ecosystems.
Gorilla Conservation in Uganda & Rwanda

Our clients being briefed before their Gorilla trekking activity
We offer gorilla trekking experiences in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Volcanoes National Park. But we do more than take guests into the forest.
Our contribution includes:
-
Paying park fees that directly support gorilla monitoring and habitat protection
-
Supporting ranger salaries and conservation training
-
Educating guests on responsible behavior during treks to reduce stress on gorilla families
Through every trek, we help fund the protection of one of the world’s most endangered species.
Human-Wildlife Conflict Mitigation
In areas like Amboseli (Kenya) and Tarangire (Tanzania), human wildlife conflict is a growing issue. We work with local NGOs to:
-
Support beehive fence projects that keep elephants out of farmland
-
Fund workshops that teach farmers how to coexist with wildlife
-
Promote land-use practices that reduce conflict and increase harmony
When people and wildlife thrive together, the whole ecosystem benefits.
2. Tree Planting & Reforestation
Deforestation threatens biodiversity and local livelihoods. Traford Safaris has partnered with reforestation groups in Uganda and Kenya to:
-
Plant native trees in degraded forest areas
-
Support community tree nurseries that provide both jobs and seedlings
-
Encourage guests to plant a tree during their visit leaving a living legacy behind
So far, we’ve helped plant over 123 indigenous trees in community forests and buffer zones.
3. Community Empowerment Programs
Supporting Local Schools
We believe in the power of education. In the regions where we operate, we work with schools to:
-
Donate supplies like books, desks, uniforms, and sanitary pads
-
Build or repair classrooms using a portion of our profits
-
Connect safari guests to local school visits or sponsorship opportunities
Some guests have even chosen to sponsor a child’s education after their safari experience.
Skills Training for Youth & Women
Many rural youth lack access to formal employment. We partner with local organizations to provide:
-
Tour guide training for young adults
-
Artisan and craft-making workshops for women
-
Business mentoring programs for community tourism initiatives
By equipping people with skills, we create long term change.
4. Promoting Local Culture & Responsible Tourism
Handcrafted Souvenirs That Make a Difference
Instead of mass produced items, we guide our travelers to locally made crafts and cooperatives. These include:
-
Handmade jewelry, baskets, and fabrics from women’s groups
-
Carvings and paintings by local artists
-
Traditional instruments and textiles with cultural stories behind them
This not only supports the economy it helps preserve cultural heritage.
Village Visits Done the Right Way
We offer cultural village visits that are ethical and mutually respectful. Unlike exploitative “tourist villages,” our visits are:
-
Led by locals themselves
-
Focused on dialogue, not performance
-
Designed to benefit the entire community through shared income
This way, travelers gain understanding, and locals keep control of their narratives.
5. How You Help by Traveling With Us
Every guest who books with Traford Safaris becomes part of this impact.
Here’s how your safari makes a difference:
Your Activity | Your Impact |
---|---|
Booking a gorilla or chimpanzee trek | Helps fund habitat protection and anti-poaching |
Choosing a community lodge | Supports local jobs and fair wages |
Visiting a craft market | Boosts local artisans and preserves traditions |
Joining a school visit | Encourages cross-cultural learning and possible sponsorship |
Planting a tree | Supports reforestation and carbon offset efforts |
We’re always looking for new ways to increase our impact. Some of our upcoming goals include:
-
Launching a wildlife education scholarship for students in conservation
-
Building a community based campsite in Jinja, Uganda
-
Hosting volunteer weeks focused on reforestation and school support
-
Expanding support for women entrepreneurs in tourism
